Virtual war against the Akali government

By 02:52:00 ,

Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh today declared a virtual war against the Akali government over its failure to transfer Ludhiana Police Commissioner in the `Chitta Raavan’ case, asking party workers in all the 117 assembly segments of the state to burn effigies of Chitta Raavan as a mark of protest.
As the Punjab Congress siege of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence continued for the second day, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president asserted, “Mark my words, this is just the beginning; we will actually destroy the Chitta and its Raavan in its entirety in the state.”
Demanding Police Commissioner Jatinder Aulakh’s transfer and suspension of ADCP-4 Jaswinder Singh, the protesting party workers, including legislators and MPs, are on indefinite dharna outside Badal’s residence since yesterday. Addressing them, Captain Amarinder Singh demanded withdrawal of cases against the Congress workers who had been jailed on the `fictitious’ charges of assaulting Akali workers in Ludhiana on Dussehra eve.
Asking the Akalis why they were so touchy about the `Chitta Raavan’ issue, Captain Amarinder said, “Is it your guilty conscience that gets pricked and causes you to get goose bumps over the very mention of ‘Chitta’?”
“By resorting to violence against burning of the Chitta Raavan, the Akalis have actually admitted to their guilt of being synonymous with the ‘Chitta’, as the synthetic drug is commonly known all over Punjab,” said the Punjab Congress chief.
Captain Amarinder said the `Chitta Raavan’ was there not just in Ludhiana but all over Punjab, with people using it to express their anger against the Badals. He disclosed that in Amritsar, the effigies of the Chief Minister and his Deputy Chief Minister son Sukhbir Singh Badal were blasted during Dussehra celebrations.
“If they think that they can intimidate and gag people by abusing their power they are miserably mistaken,” he said about the Badals, adding that it was a matter of few months more before the Badals are forced to run for cover. “Today people are only burning your effigies, tomorrow they will actually be after your life,” he warned the Badals.
“People will not even wait for the elections; they are simply waiting for the code of conduct to be announced before they start venting their anger against the Badals,” Captain Amarinder said, warning them to mend their ways and tame their goons as their countdown had already started.
The PCC president reiterated the party’s demand for the transfer of the Ludhiana Police Commissioner, who he said was acting more like an Akali Jathedar than a police officer. He also demanded the cancellation of FIRs against the Congress leaders and their immediate release from jail.
“It is an irony that the culprits are walking free and the victims have been put behind bars,” Capt Amarinder said, pointing out that the Congress leaders were arrested and the Akali goons, who had attacked and injured the Congress leaders, had not even been touched.
As a show of solidarity with their colleagues in Ludhiana, the PCC president said Congressmen will be asked to burn effigies of the Chitta Raavan in all the assembly segments. “We will start with this symbolic burning before actually destroying the real evil of Chitta and its Raavan in Punjab,” he said.
